Mexico - Day 6
Posted by: faithne in Group Blogs |
We’ve had an amazing week here in TJ. Yesterday we finished building houses and were challenged by missionary Brad Buser. Brad took the Gospel to an unreached, unengaged people in Papua New Guinea. He shared how it took years to learn their language and translate the Bible. Then after sharing the Gospel for the first time they stayed another 11 years to disciple the new church and get it to the point of being a healthy and reproducing church. It was a powerful testimony. We then headed out to Spectrum ministries’ bathhouse location. We washed the feet and hair of around 150 little boys and girls and handed out clothes. It was a great experience of humble service for us. Tonight we got to take our first shower of the week, it was great and definitely something to be thankful for.
Tomorrow we are doing some service projects that Eddie lined up for us. It should be a lot of fun. We then pack up and get ready for the trip home on Saturday. I will have all the students call their parents when we arrive in Denver on Saturday. I think that should be around noon on if everything goes well. We will see everyone at home soon!

Mexico - Day 4

We built houses again today. Our two groups split up and went our separate ways. We finished our build around 3pm so our team leader took us to her host family’s house. Her host dad is a pastor of a church here in TJ so she showed us the church. It was really great to get that experience because I have always wanted to see where the church gathers in TJ. The church was smaller than our youth room and typically has 40-50 people on Sunday for a two hour worship service and an hour of classes.
There are only a few people I haven’t built with yet but I have been extremely proud of our students on the work sites. Everyone has been working hard and loving on the families. We have had a few dings from the work sites but overall God has kept us safe. Tomorrow is our last building day.
The guys have developed a habit of getting a snack from Maria’s hot dog and hamburger stand on the corner a couple blocks from the dorm. The food is great and it has forced us to learn some Spanish. I now know the words for “one hamburger with bacon, lettuce, onions, tomato, pickles and ketchup.” With proper motivation, anyone can learn Spanish :)
Thanks for your prayers and support from the Midwest.

Atkinson Group Mexico - Day 3

On Sunday we started with our devotions and then headed to the Tiangas. The Tiangas are a little like a huge garage sale. There are probably a hundred vendors who set up their tents. You can buy all kinds of things at the Tiangas, many of the students made small purchases which forced them to engage in some conversation with our Spanish speaking neighbors. What is really nice is that people in Mexico are very patient with us. In the afternoon we headed to the beach. It was probably 55 degrees out with a 15 mph wind blowing but we still had some student who got wet.
Today was our first building day. We started with some worship followed by a powerful message from Eddie. Eddie is the director of the ministry here at Caravans. After the message we headed to the build site. Our group was split into two groups. We built a 12’x16’ and a 12’x12’ house for two families. My group did an amazing job. Everyone did anything they could to get the job done. Ashley and Meagan cut their first 2x4 by hand this morning (Way to GO!). Calab and Noble showed their skill in construction and really did a great job. Sebastion was great helping me finish up the door and windows. Brianna helped with construction but had the most fun coloring and playing with the children on the site. The family we built for had a six year old girl and a two year old. I didn’t get a chance to work with Alex, Matt, Kelsey, Katie, Kaitlyn because they were on the other team but Duane (their leader) gave a very good report of their work. When we finished the build we had some time so we walked up to the Cathedral (2 blocks away) and played Basketball and Soccer. Sebastion, Caleb and Noble played 3 on 3 with some Mexican guys. It was a riot to watch them try to communicate with each other. Lots of smiles and laughs and in the end I really don’t know who won but they all had a good time. In the evening we had the opportunity to listen and interact with a couple heading to Southeast Asia in 2012. It was really cool to hear their story and learn from them.
With the end of that I figured I should blog a little. I apologize for taking a few days to post. Hopefully it will be daily from here out now that we have an account set up. Everything is going really well in Tiijuana. Please pray for us as we serve. Thanks for your support we love you!

Mexigoers from Norwalk Iowa
Posted by: fellowshipcommunity in Group Blogs |Hello all; we have made it back home to Iowa. I believe our team returned changed people. For sure we now have a renewed appreciation of missionaries and the work they do. We have learned that we have the ability to help and can make a deference in someone else’s life that is less fortunate than ours. We heard from some very gifted speakers and were challenged to take the Gospel to unreached people groups of the world, if called to do so. If not, then to send those that are called. I personally thank the Lord for watching over us the whole trip. Prayers for our safety were definitely answered. I was blessed to be a part of the 2011 Mexico team – thanks..

Grace Chapel Day Four
Posted by: gracechapellancaster in Group Blogs |Greetings from Mexico, this is Andy again. I am gonna keep this short because it is late and I am very tired. Today we heard Brad Buser talk about making our life fall in line with God’s plan, instead of thinking that we are allowed to make our own plans. Then we worked with Spectrum ministries for the day. After enjoying an amazing meal that was prepared by one of the office ladies, we heard from Tyler and Sam, then Frank Grubbs from World Vision. This week has been fantastic and I am very excited to see it how it continues to impact the kids after we come home.

Hola a todos! (Hello everyone) It's Danielle M. blogging away this evening! This past week has been the most memorable week I've ever experienced! At first, the culture and food was tough to get used to but now I don't want to ever leave! Sorry mom and dad! Everyone, including the kids, are the most considerate and family-oriented people I have ever met. The families help the workers and I out by building and painting the houses with us. I have felt the Lord tugging on my heart about applying for an internship here at Mexico Caravan Ministries next summer. I feel like I would have a rough time being an intern away from home for a long time but I love C.T. Studd's quote: Except great things from God; Attempt great things for God.
Today was an interesting day! I've been praying about building on a mountain and that's exactly what we did! Although it was extremely challenging trying to get down the mountain in our 15 passenger van. It was truly an adventure because the interns got a flat tire on our way there and had to wait approximately an hour for them to get it changed. But don't worry everyone, all of us kids in my van got Monsters! It was awesome!
Grace Chapel Day Three
Posted by: gracechapellancaster in Group Blogs |Hello everybody, it’s Andy again. I just want to tell you that our trip is going fantastic, the kids are doing great, and we are all really excited for what the Lord has in store for us tomorrow and the rest of the week. Tonight after we ate dinner Jeremy assigned the group into 3 person teams and gave each of them a chapter of the Bible to teach on, so that we could all share from the Bible with each other. The original intent was that everyone would go for five minutes, but after the first group delivered a 35 minute sermon we decided to end early and put off the other groups until later because of time constraints. I personally think that is a great problem to have and I am excited to see what it is the kids learn from the passages that they study. (James Mullen thought it was a terrible because he didn’t get to share and he was really excited to, so we told him that he could go first tomorrow). Tomorrow we will be going to Spectrum ministries after hearing from Brad Buser, so knowing that I have a full day ahead of me tomorrow I am going to go ahead and turn in for the night. Please enjoy what Courtney Brown wrote earlier tonight for all you to read.

Hey everybody! Once again, this is Tyler S, blogging away. Jacey, Dani, and Jennifer say hi! Last night after I finished blogging, we got to listen to Paul Gervasi. Paul and his wife are missionaries in Indonesia, and are associated with New Tribes Mission. Paul shared with us, his journey to becoming a missionary and his life since becoming a missionary. He shared the stories of Moses and Gideon. Moses had a speech impediment, but God chose him to be his mouthpiece to Egypt and his people, Israel. Gideon had an army of 300 men to fight Midian’s army of 135,000 men. God put these men in their position so that when they accomplished what they had set out to do, none of the praise went to them; instead it all went to God. Paul said that God did the same thing with him. He told us how he had failed Spanish two years in a row in high school, but with God’s help learned two speak three different languages and reach previously unreached people groups.
Grace Chapel Day Two
Posted by: gracechapellancaster in Group Blogs |Greetings from Mexico, this is Andy again. I just wanted to update you a little on the trip. House building is going just fine and the kids are having a blast. They are pretty tired after today, so they should sleep well tonight. Keep praying for them, not only that they would remain rested and healthy, but also that they would be attentive to the Holy Spirit.
Today we heard from Dave Burdette in the morning meeting and Paul Gervasi in the evening meeting. Dave and Paul both shared their testimonies with the group and then challenged them from the Word; Dave challenged us to listen to the counsel of God and not the world, while Paul talked about just what kind of person it is that God chooses to use to accomplish his purposes.
